It is the oldest thatched pub in Northern Ireland and is also one of Ireland's most famous Irish Traditional Music pubs. It is thought to have been built around 1740.〔 In February 2000 the building was seriously damaged by fire. Shortly thereafter fundraising projects were instigated, including the recording and production of a CD, ''Live in the Kitchen'', featuring 20 tracks from 30 local musicians.
